  Live in Rhode Island? Have children? Here’s an idea that combines "street smarts" with history: the Rhode Island Historical Society's 2017 walking tour schedule has launched with loads of new ways to participate, including earlier start times, new routes, and special themes. Help your kids learn about the capital city and at the same time, gain confidence in knowing the “lay of the land” of Providence's iconic Benefit Street, located on the East Side. Made for walking, exploring and learning, these strolls are a great way to see the city with fresh eyes and hear a story of our city's center that touches on the past, present, and future. Admission: $15; $12 for seniors; $10 for RIHS members and students, $6 for children 8-17, and free for children under 8. Taking place Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays through Saturdays, beginning in May; tour departs at 10 a.m.

Casey Farm’s weekly Coastal Growers Market was named “one of the five best farmers’ markets in New England” by Yankee Magazine. Easy to get to, and surrounded by the bounty Rhode Island is known for, visitors will find specialty products, including organic produce, pasture-fed meats, locally raised shellfish, baked goods, sweeteners, flowers, and more from the area’s local farmers. Support local farmers and shop for the family, while enjoying the views!

FarmFest 2017

Head over to the FarmFest Celebration at Mount Hope Farm for tours, Native American storytellers, militia re-enactments, viewing of farm animals, hayrides and much more. Held at the Farm, in the historic buildings and grounds, the FarmFest will have tons kid-friendly activities, including games and scavenger hunts, plus free face painting, balloon animals, and crafts. Halloween costumes encouraged! Bluegrass music will put a spring in your step, and kids will have a chance to meet a real beekeeper and see a marine life exhibit on view. Enjoy fresh cooked food, including hamburgers and cold drinks for purchase. Fall foliage and pumpkin patches aren’t the only way to celebrate autumn! (And if you have a grocery list that needs to be checked off, catch the last outdoors Farmers Market of the season from 9 am to 1 pm on the same day!)
